Dr. Rao was former Microsoft Chair professor of Intellectual Property & Director of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from 2004 to 2013 has worked in the field of International Intellectual Property Law, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation, and arbitration particularly with reference to foreign investments, intellectual property, technology, uniform domain names and UNCITRAL commercial arbitration matters.
Dr. Rao lectured extensively on intellectual property, WIPO and the UN at several universities in the USA from 1995 to date. He was an active member of the International Law Association, India Branch.
Dr. Rao was associated with various other positions at Ministry of external affairs-Govt. of India, University of Madras, NIPER, International Seabed authority- Jamaica, Permanent mission of India to United nations- UN, Pace university school of law, SIPA- Columbia, International developmental law organisation- UN, Transcarbon International

She has a strong academic background with a Doctorate degree in Chemistry from Osmania University.
She is having rich, hands-on experience in all aspects of Patent & Portfolio management. Experience in handling Patent & Portfolio management for API’s, formulations and NCE’s. With overall experience spanning over 17 years, she worked on Product strategy, Product selection, Portfolio management, IP creation, IP protection, IP commercialization, IP portfolio management, IP strategy, IP Litigation, IP licensing, Innovation management, Prosecution strategy for patents, creation of patent families for technology picket fencing, Patent drafting, Patent filing, Patent prosecution, Negotiation and preparation of various agreements, IP training and IPR team building. Her core strength is Product selection and Product strategy based on the business model of the company.
